Mariano Rivera Tears ACL

There have just been too many dang injuries lately in sports. The latest... Mariano Rivera, closer for the Yankees, tore his ACL yesterday during batting practice trying to catch this fly ball. Ouch. Sucks to see that happen to such a great player and a great guy. This could end Rivera's career as he is 42 years old. I would hope not, because he is one of the best to play the game, and definitely a Hall of Famer.

Jered Weaver Throws No-Hitter

Jered Weaver

Congrats to Jered Weaver on throwing a no-hitter tonight. He just finished it up about five minutes ago. I don't wanna take anything away from the guy, because that is quite an amazing task to complete. But the Twins are just garbagely awful. GARBAGELY AWFUL. We need to do something with our roster and our pitching. Lost this one 9-0.
Sucks to be a fan of Minnesota sports in this era. Again, congrats to Weaver. Pitched a great game tonight.

Ozzie Guillen Suspended

In case you haven't heard, Ozzie Guillen, manager of the Miami Marlins, made some pretty dumb comments this week. He said he "loves Castro" and "respects Castro" for staying in power for so long. He claims to have meant it in a different way, as he was thinking it in Spanish and saying it in English. That is somewhat understandable, but you "love" Castro?? Come on, the comments are ridiculous.
Guillen has been suspended for the next five games. This is understandable, as it should tell him to keep his mouth shut on stupid issues that have nothing to do with baseball. He also offered an apology that I thought was very sincere. So should Ozzie be fired for the comments?
If you are gonna fire him, don't fire him because he made some comments in poor judgement. He has every right to make any comment he wants, even if he means every word. This is America, come on... It may be necessary to fire him, because over half of his fans are Latino, and are not huge fans of Fidel Castro. The Marlins do need to have fans in the stadium after all...
But I think people need to calm down. He's a baseball manager, not a political analyst. He shouldn't have to worry about these kinds of questions. Much less, I don't think fans should have to worry what he thinks about these stupid issues. He's there to coach a baseball team and help them win games. If the Marlins are winning and keeping decent attendance, I think they should keep Ozzie. Give him another chance. You know he won't make those stupid comments again... That's just my opinion. I'm sure there are many others, and I would love to hear them.

Well, the Twins Suck

The Twins are off to a 0-4 start in which they haven't held a lead. They lost 3 in Baltimore, and yesterday got off to a bad start against the Angels, losing 5-1. They play the Angels again tomorrow. I didn't expect them to be a great team this year, but come on guys. Mauer is getting paid $23 million to hit under.100 thus far. Our hitting is awful. I don't think we're gonna even win a game this year... (at this pace we won't)
But in all honesty, can't wait to hit up some games at Target Field. Even if we stink this year it will be fun to get to watch. I think the Angels are gonna be the team to beat this year. They look really good, and I'll probably end up rooting for them toward the end of the season. I'm glad we finally got some baseball, since I'm kinda sick of basketball and the Wolves (who have lost 6 straight now). Good work Minnesota! (not).

Twins Spring Training

The Twins start their season today in Florida as Spring Training kicks off. I don't know where one can watch this game, but I'm sure we'll see the highlights on ESPN for the next few weeks. This is an exciting time because it means baseball is close and I can't wait to make it to a couple games at Target Field this Spring. I'm sure I can make a follow-up post about the progress of the team throughout Spring Training. Go Twinkies!

Joel Zumaya Out for Season

Joel Zumaya

Twins new pitcher Joel Zumaya will be out for the season with a torn elbow ligament. He tore his UCL to be exact, which is very heartbreaking, and tough to make it back from as a pitcher. Twins fans were really looking forward to seeing Zumaya play this year, as he has a crazy awesome fastball that would have really helped the Twinkies pitching staff. Looks like Minny is gonna need to pick up a new guy or bring up someone from the minors. This is a sucky time for Twins fans, as Justin Morneau has also been having problems with his injury. We're really hoping that Joe Mauer can stay healthy this year as well. Here's what infielder Luke Hughes had to say about the situation:

Sad day in Twins camp today with Joel Zumaya finding out he has a torn UCL.

Suspension for Braun Overturned

For those who didn't hear, Ryan Braun's 50-game suspension was overturned yesterday. I think it's a crazy verdict, but I guess it will be fun to watch Braun come back this season right away? I don't really know the whole situation, but I thought this was very interesting since this was the first substance abuse case to get overturned in MLB history. The reports have been that the league did a lousy job of keeping track of the urine sample and they can't be sure if his had a certain amount of substance in that sample. I think that's weird... but nonetheless, baseball starts soon so that's good!

Prince Fielder to the Tigers

Prince Fielder is making beaucoup bucks as he signed with the Detroit Tigers for nine years worth $214 million. Now come on, really?? Prince Fielder is decent, definitely can hit the ball which will be a problem for pitchers in the American League this year. But unlike his name implies, he's not a great fielder... I think Pujols definitely deserved that contract, because he can pretty much do it all. I don't think Prince brings the same value to the game as Pujols, but we'll see...
One thing that sucks a lot is that the Twins are gonna have to pitch to him this season. We just don't have the pitching to win games against hitters like the Detroit Tigers have. Pretty much this deal sucks for the Twinkies, but we were gonna suck anyway this year. Really I'm not too disappointed in it, just a little shocked that Prince is earning this much money. Maybe it will work out for them, and I wish Prince the best of luck this season. Let's see if he can prove me wrong.
